Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed his disappointment following Nigeria’s exit in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), but he insists his squad will remain focused on securing a podium finish.

Gossip News Now reports that Nigeria fell to host nation Morocco on Wednesday, losing 4-2 in a tense penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regulation time. The three-time African champions are now set to face Egypt for the third-place match at the Mohammed V Stadium on Saturday at 5:00 PM.

“To be honest, I’m disappointed with the outcome,” Chelle told reporters. “I had high hopes for this tournament. After the loss to Morocco, I encouraged my players to keep their heads up, and they reminded me to do the same as we prepare for Saturday’s game.”

The 48-year-old Malian coach, widely praised for Nigeria’s resilient performance throughout the tournament, stressed the importance of returning home with a medal.

“We must go back to Nigeria with third place,” he said during Friday’s media interaction.

Despite the setback, Chelle is already looking ahead. He hinted at plans to integrate new talent into the squad, regardless of whether he continues as head coach beyond the tournament. “If I am given the opportunity to remain as coach after the AFCON, I would like to bring in more players to strengthen the team,” he added.
