Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has reaffirmed his determination to guide Nigeria back to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging his players to approach the upcoming playoffs with the mentality of “warriors.”
The Franco-Malian tactician made this known during an interview with football legend Segun Odegbami on 90 Minutes with Mathematical on Eagle7 FM on Saturday. Chelle, who has enjoyed widespread support since taking over the national team, expressed deep appreciation to Nigerians for their unwavering backing.
“Thanks to the fans. Thanks to Nigeria. I am so happy that I have brought smiles back to their faces,” Chelle said. “We beat Benin because the fans pushed the players. I ask them to do the same for the playoffs. I promise to give my best for Nigeria, and Inshallah, we will go to the FIFA World Cup.”
Appointed in January 2025 during a difficult period for the Super Eagles, Chelle inherited a team struggling in the qualifiers—having gone winless in their first four matches, managing only three draws and one loss.
However, under his leadership, the team has experienced a remarkable turnaround—winning four and drawing two of their last six fixtures to amass 14 points out of a possible 18. One of their standout performances was a 4–0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo earlier this month, which kept Nigeria firmly in the World Cup qualification race.
According to Naija News, the Super Eagles finished as one of Africa’s best runners-up, securing a place in the November playoffs, where they will battle Gabon in a one-legged tie. Should they advance, a potential clash with either Cameroon or DR Congo awaits in the next round.
Chelle, known for his discipline and tactical sharpness, emphasized that his team must approach the playoffs with intensity and purpose.
“Qualifying for the FIFA World Cup is not a war—but it feels like one,” he said. “My players must have a warrior’s mindset. They have to be like sharks.”
Nigeria last missed out on the 2022 World Cup after being eliminated by Ghana on away goals in Abuja—a setback Chelle insists will not repeat itself under his watch.
