Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri is on the mend after undergoing heart surgery to correct a rhythm disorder, with the club confirming the procedure was successful and expecting him to return to training within days.

The 66-year-old Italian, who previously managed Chelsea, had been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a common condition that can cause irregular heartbeat, chest discomfort, dizziness, and shortness of breath. The operation had reportedly been scheduled for some time.

Sarri underwent transcatheter ablation, a minimally invasive procedure designed to remove faulty electrical signals in the heart. Lazio issued an official statement confirming the intervention went smoothly.

“SS Lazio announces that coach Maurizio Sarri, following a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation, underwent transcatheter ablation surgery using PFA technology at the Tor Vergata Polyclinic,” the statement read.
“The surgery, performed by Professor Andrea Natale, an international pioneer with over thirty years of experience treating this condition, was successful.
“Team doctor Dr. Dralo Leo was present throughout.
“The coach will resume regular team management in the coming days.
“SS Lazio and the Coach thank the Policlinico Tor Vergata and Professor Natale’s team for their professionalism and high-quality patient care.”

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Sarri was expected to remain in the hospital for roughly 24 hours. He will miss three days of training, which will be led by his assistant Marco Ianni, but could return to the bench as early as Friday. There is also a possibility he will be back in charge for Lazio’s clash with Napoli on Sunday.

Lazio currently sit eighth in Serie A, with six wins, six draws, and five losses this season. Sarri is in his second spell with the Rome-based club after rejoining over a year after stepping down previously.

The veteran coach has an impressive resume, having guided Chelsea to the Europa League title in 2019 and Juventus to the Serie A crown in 2020.
