A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Alhaji Fasiu Bakene, has thrown his weight behind the expulsion of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, describing the action as necessary to restore order and discipline in the party.

Bakene argued that the expelled leaders had consistently undermined the platform that elevated them politically.

“It is long overdue. Their statements, conduct, and repeated violations of the PDP constitution should have been addressed long ago. They have shown the capacity to destroy the very party that made them relevant in Nigeria’s political space,” he said in Abeokuta on Tuesday, November 18, while reacting to the fallout from the party’s national convention and the growing internal tensions.

He accused the trio of “enjoying the demarketing” of the PDP, noting that their removal would help rebuild trust and stability within the party.

“Instead of honourably defecting to the party they truly support, they insist on calling themselves PDP members while openly campaigning for the success of another party,” he added.

Bakene, a former Ogun State lawmaker, expressed optimism that the internal crisis shaking the PDP will soon be resolved, despite recent waves of defections.

He maintained that disagreements are common in major political parties and can be settled, especially with the emergence of a new national chairman.

“With the new National Chairman in place, all rifts will soon be settled, regardless of the current gale of defections,” he said.

Speaking on the recently concluded national convention, Bakene praised the organising committee for delivering what he described as a well-coordinated and highly attended event that showcased the PDP’s enduring internal strength.

“The convention was peaceful and witnessed an impressive turnout of delegates. It reaffirmed the supremacy of the party’s leadership and structures. Members of the NEC, BoT, and NWC were all present,” he said.

He also commended the various subcommittees—including transportation, venue management, protocol, accommodation, publicity, and logistics—for executing what he called a “perfect job.”

Bakene applauded the emergence of former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, as the new national chairman of the PDP, describing him as a seasoned administrator capable of repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Turaki’s emergence is a step toward a resounding victory for the PDP. He has the administrative and political experience needed to lead the party effectively. His track record as a minister speaks for him. Without doubt, he will steer the ship to success,” he stated.

Bakene expressed confidence that despite current challenges, the PDP will regain stability and reassert itself as a strong and united opposition force ahead of the next general election.
