Faleke Claims Naira Redesign Was Intended to Prevent Tinubu’s Victory

A Nigerian lawmaker has stirred political debate after suggesting that the controversial redesign of the national currency before the last general election was intended to influence the outcome of the presidential race. The claim was made by James Abiodun Faleke, who represents Ikeja Federal Constituency and serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Finance.

Faleke shared his views while speaking with journalists in Abuja during a charity outreach event. The gathering involved the distribution of rice and other forms of assistance to vulnerable residents and supporters associated with the Tinubu Support Group.

According to the lawmaker, the policy that introduced redesigned naira notes in the lead-up to the election created widespread difficulties across the country. He recalled that cash shortages during the period affected many Nigerians, making it difficult for people to carry out everyday transactions.

While reflecting on that period, Faleke argued that the currency change was not merely an economic decision but also had political implications. In his opinion, the move was intended to weaken the chances of Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.

The legislator pointed out that the scarcity of cash at the time made daily life extremely challenging for many citizens. He said even basic purchases became difficult because physical currency was not easily available in circulation.

Despite the hardships experienced during that period, Faleke noted that the election outcome did not follow what he believed the policy intended to achieve. Instead, Tinubu secured victory at the polls and eventually assumed office as Nigeria’s president.

During his remarks, Faleke attributed the outcome to what he described as divine intervention. He suggested that, in his view, Tinubu’s emergence as president demonstrated resilience in the face of multiple political and economic challenges.

The lawmaker also congratulated supporters present at the outreach programme, telling them that the president’s victory was something they could all celebrate despite the obstacles encountered during the election season.

Commentary and Analysis

The naira redesign policy remains one of the most debated economic decisions in Nigeria’s recent political history. Introduced shortly before the 2023 elections, the policy triggered widespread cash shortages that disrupted businesses and daily transactions across the country.

Supporters of the policy argued that it was meant to curb corruption, reduce vote-buying, and encourage the use of digital payments. Critics, however, claimed that the timing of the implementation contributed to unnecessary hardship and raised questions about its broader political consequences.

Faleke’s comments reflect a perspective held by some political actors who believe the policy had implications beyond monetary reform. Whether or not such claims can be substantiated, the controversy surrounding the naira redesign illustrates how economic policies can become deeply intertwined with political narratives during election cycles.

The debate also highlights the broader tension between policy objectives and political perception. When reforms are implemented close to major elections, they often become subject to interpretation through a political lens.
