Former Senator Kabir Garba Marafa, who once represented Zamfara Central Senatorial District, has rejected claims circulating online that he has rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The veteran politician described the report as inaccurate and urged the public to disregard it, insisting that he has not made any move to return to the ruling party.
Media Office Issues Clarification
A statement released on Thursday by Comrade Mansur M. Haruna, Director-General (New Media) in Marafa’s media office, dismissed the report as false.
The statement specifically referenced a publication by an online platform that alleged Marafa had returned to the APC along with his supporters.
According to the statement, the report contained several factual errors and appeared designed to misinform the public about the politician’s current political position.
Background of His Exit From APC
Marafa reminded the public that he formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress on August 28, 2025.
He noted that the decision was not taken alone but involved thousands of his supporters across all 14 local government areas of Zamfara State.
Since that announcement, he said there has been no official declaration from him suggesting that he has joined or rejoined any political party.
Previous Role in Tinubu Campaign
The former senator also recalled his involvement in the 2023 presidential election, during which he served as the APC campaign coordinator in Zamfara State for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Despite that role, he later voiced dissatisfaction with the party, accusing its leadership of sidelining him and ignoring his political structure after the election.
These grievances eventually contributed to his decision to leave the party.
Errors Highlighted in the Report
Marafa’s media team pointed out several inaccuracies in the publication that sparked the controversy.
Among the mistakes mentioned were:
- Incorrectly describing him as a member of the House of Representatives instead of a former senator
- Associating him with Sokoto State, despite being widely known as a native of Zamfara State
- Claiming he left the APC in 2018 to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
According to the statement, these details were completely inaccurate and undermined the credibility of the report.
Call for Responsible Journalism
Marafa’s office also used the opportunity to remind media organisations about the importance of verifying information before publication.
The statement urged journalists and editors to adhere to professional standards by ensuring that political news is thoroughly fact-checked before being circulated.
Failure to do so, it warned, can mislead the public and damage reputations.
No Current Party Alignment
The former senator stressed that he has not publicly aligned himself with any political party since leaving the APC.
He added that if he eventually decides to join another political platform, the announcement will be made openly and directly to the public.
Until then, he asked supporters and the media to ignore claims suggesting otherwise.
Commentary and Analysis
The controversy surrounding the alleged APC return highlights the intense interest in Nigeria’s shifting political alliances ahead of future elections.
Political figures with strong grassroots influence—such as Marafa in Zamfara—often become the subject of speculation regarding party realignments.
In many cases, such reports emerge before any official confirmation, reflecting the competitive nature of Nigerian politics.
Marafa’s response also underscores the growing challenge of misinformation in the digital media space, where unverified political stories can spread quickly.
For political observers, his firm denial suggests that his next political move remains undecided, leaving room for potential alliances as the country’s political landscape evolves.
