Residents of Ipele-Owo in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State were thrown into panic on Wednesday night after suspected bandits attacked and set ablaze a police station in the community.
The violent incident reportedly occurred around 10:00 pm, as many Christian residents were preparing for crossover church services to usher in the New Year. Heavy gunfire during the attack forced both civilians and security personnel to flee the area for safety.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, believed to be about 20 in number, stormed the community in what was described as a coordinated, commando-style operation. The attackers allegedly fired sporadically before targeting the Ipele Police Divisional Station.
“It was a terrorist-style attack. About 20 armed men came into the community shooting everywhere before attacking the police station,” a resident, who spoke anonymously, said.
The witness added that the intensity of the gunfire created widespread fear, forcing many residents to run into nearby bushes to escape.
“The sounds were terrifying. No one could withstand it, so we all fled for safety,” the source explained.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Jimoh Abayomi, said the attack did occur but noted that full details were still being compiled.
“Yes, it happened. We are gathering details and will provide a comprehensive update,” he stated.
Following the attack, security operatives were reportedly deployed to the area to restore order and secure the community, as investigations into the incident continue.
