Nearly two years after the pledge was first announced, Nigeria’s Federal Government has finally fulfilled its promise of housing rewards to members of the Super Eagles team that finished as runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The housing allocations were formally presented to the players and officials in Fez, Morocco, where the national team had gathered ahead of their opening match at the 2025 AFCON tournament. The ceremony took place through the National Sports Commission (NSC), signalling the completion of the reward package promised to the team after their impressive continental performance.
Reward Promise Made After AFCON 2023 Final
Nigeria reached the final of the 2023 AFCON, which was played between January and February 2024. The Super Eagles ultimately finished second after a 2–1 defeat to host nation Côte d’Ivoire in the championship match.
At the time, the team was led by Portuguese coach José Peseiro, whose squad had delivered one of Nigeria’s strongest AFCON campaigns in recent years.
Following their return to Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu honoured the players and technical staff with national recognition. During the reception, he also pledged to provide housing and land allocations as part of the reward package for the team’s achievement.
Certificates of Ownership Issued to Beneficiaries
The government’s promise was formally implemented this week, with players and officials receiving documents confirming ownership of the properties.
Officials explained that the process involved issuing Certificates of Occupancy to beneficiaries, confirming that the housing allocations had been legally processed and completed.
The announcement was made publicly by Promise Efoghe, the Super Eagles media officer, through the team’s official communication platform.
National Sports Commission Confirms Completion
Senior sports administrators also confirmed that the government had completed the entire reward process.
Among those who verified the development were:
- Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission
- Ibrahim Musa Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)
- Senator Abdul Ningi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports
According to them, the honours awarded to the players were categorised under national recognition titles such as Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) or Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), depending on any previous honours already held by individual players.
Timing Coincides With AFCON 2025 Campaign
The presentation of the housing benefits came just a day before Nigeria began its 2025 AFCON campaign.
The Super Eagles, now under the leadership of Franco-Malian coach Eric Chelle, are competing in Group C of the tournament.
Nigeria’s group stage schedule includes matches against:
- Tanzania
- Tunisia
- Uganda
The team hopes to improve on their previous tournament performance and reclaim the continental title.
Recent Challenges for the Super Eagles
The start of the AFCON campaign comes after a challenging period for the national team.
Nigeria narrowly missed qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The AFCON tournament therefore presents an opportunity for the team to rebuild momentum and restore confidence among supporters.
Government Recognition of National Teams
The housing rewards for the Super Eagles are part of a broader pattern of recognition by the federal government for successful Nigerian sports teams.
In 2025, other national teams also received similar acknowledgements for their achievements.
Among the most notable recognitions were:
- Super Falcons players receiving national honours and $100,000 each after winning their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title
- Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, also being promised rewards following their fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket championship
These gestures are intended to motivate athletes and celebrate Nigeria’s achievements on the international sporting stage.
Commentary and Sports Policy Analysis
Rewarding athletes for major international achievements has become an important part of Nigeria’s sports policy. Incentives such as housing, financial bonuses, and national honours are often used to recognise exceptional performance and encourage future success.
However, delays in fulfilling such promises have sometimes generated criticism from fans and athletes alike. The completion of the Super Eagles housing pledge may therefore be viewed as a step toward rebuilding trust between athletes and government institutions.
For players, these benefits represent more than symbolic recognition—they also provide long-term financial security after years of representing the country on the international stage.
As the Super Eagles begin their AFCON 2025 campaign, the fulfilment of the government’s promise could also serve as a morale boost, reinforcing the nation’s appreciation for the team’s achievements.
