Just under three weeks ago, Flamingos head coach Bankole Olowookere voiced his disappointment following Nigeria’s early exit from the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Gossip News Now reports that Nigeria’s campaign ended in a heavy 4-0 defeat to Italy in the Round of 16 clash held in Rabat.
Although the Flamingos showed glimpses of quality, they were unable to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities and were punished by a highly clinical Italian side.
Nigeria also had a goal disallowed by VAR for offside before Italy scored just before halftime and dominated the remainder of the match.
“Honestly, it’s very painful. We approached the game with the mindset of achieving something special, aiming to win and advance to the next stage,” Olowookere told FIFA.com after the match. “Unfortunately, we managed to hold for 44 minutes before conceding, and everything fell apart in the second half. It’s one of those moments.”
The defeat means Nigeria’s attempt to build on its semi-final finish in the previous edition ended prematurely.
Italy’s win secured their place in the quarter-finals, joining Brazil, the Netherlands, and North Korea in the last eight. Brazil comfortably defeated China 3-0, North Korea crushed hosts Morocco 6-1, while the Netherlands edged past the United States on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
