Nigeria’s Rivers United suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Morocco’s RS Berkane in their second CAF Champions League group-stage match, leaving coach Finidi George visibly disappointed.

After opening the campaign with a 3-0 loss to Egypt’s Pyramids, Rivers United needed a win at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium to keep their hopes of progressing alive.

The home side appeared in control for much of the first half. An own goal by RS Berkane defender Mamadou Camara in the 37th minute gave Rivers a 1-0 lead, and Finidi’s team dominated without extending their advantage.

“First half, I thought we played well. We created chances and controlled the game, but football is about taking your opportunities,” Finidi said after the match.

The second half, however, brought a cruel turn of events. RS Berkane gradually gained control and repeatedly tested Rivers United’s defence. Despite holding firm for much of the game, Rivers conceded two stoppage-time goals.

Youness El Kaabi equalised in the 97th minute from a set piece, and barely a minute later, Mounir Chouair struck the winner after a deflected clearance exposed the defence.

“To concede two in two minutes is heartbreaking. The players showed spirit, but we have to learn from this,” admitted Finidi George, the former Super Eagles coach.

The loss leaves Rivers United bottom of Group A with zero points, and their upcoming trip to Power Dynamos in Zambia has now become crucial. Any further slip-ups could prematurely end their Champions League campaign, making January’s return fixture a must-win.
