Gabriel Suswam, former Governor of Benue State and ex-Senator representing Benue North-East, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing persistent internal conflicts as the reason for his departure.
The announcement was made in a resignation letter dated Wednesday, February 4, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area, Benue State. Suswam explained that his decision was carefully considered after years of unresolved party disputes.
Reflecting on his political journey, the former governor acknowledged the PDP for providing him with platforms to serve the nation—as a member of the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007, Governor of Benue State between 2007 and 2015, and later as Senator from 2019 to 2023. He expressed gratitude for the trust and opportunities the party offered him throughout his career.
Despite this appreciation, Suswam expressed disappointment over what he described as the party’s deviation from its core principles of internal cohesion, democracy, and constructive opposition. He highlighted leadership struggles, ideological disagreements, and a breakdown of disciplinary structures as persistent issues that had not been addressed effectively.
“Despite repeated interventions, reconciliatory committees, and public assurances, the party continues to operate in a state of deep internal dysfunction,” Suswam wrote, likening the PDP to an institution “in political intensive care” with no clear strategy to resolve its challenges.
He noted that remaining within the party had become increasingly incompatible with his personal convictions and political philosophy. According to him, political parties should be platforms for ideas, discipline, and constructive engagement—not arenas for endless internal conflict.
Suswam described his resignation as both “honourable and necessary” and refrained from revealing his future political plans. However, he extended goodwill to the PDP, expressing hope that the party might one day resolve its internal issues.
The letter concluded with a message of appreciation to party members at all levels for their shared experiences over the years and a formal request for his resignation to be accepted.
