The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has begun renewed efforts to rebuild unity within its ranks as it prepares for the 2027 general elections. Party leaders and senior members gathered in Abuja for a high-level strategy meeting aimed at strengthening internal cohesion and repositioning the party politically.

The meeting was convened by the newly appointed National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), who invited key stakeholders including members of the National Working Committee (NWC), the Forum of Former Governors, and the Forum of Former Ministers.

Turaki explained that the decision to involve senior figures in the party was deliberate. According to him, many of the individuals present were responsible for key policies and projects during the years when the PDP governed Nigeria for sixteen consecutive years.

He emphasized that the party’s leadership wants to learn from the experience of these former officeholders, particularly regarding the strategies and governance style that once earned the party widespread public support.

Turaki acknowledged that the party had experienced challenges in recent years but assured attendees that the new leadership intends to address past shortcomings through fairness, transparency, and internal reforms.

According to the chairman, the PDP is determined to rebuild trust among its members and supporters, adding that the party must evolve if it hopes to regain national leadership.

During the gathering, several senior party figures shared their perspectives on the path forward. Dr. Babangida Aliyu, who heads the PDP Former Governors’ Forum, stressed that reconnecting with Nigerians should be the party’s top priority.

Aliyu argued that political success in the future would depend on humility, discipline, and a willingness to listen to the concerns of citizens across the country.

He also suggested that dissatisfaction with the current political environment could create an opportunity for the PDP to regain public confidence, provided the party demonstrates unity and credible leadership.

Another prominent voice at the meeting was Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, who spoke on behalf of the Forum of Former Ministers.

Shekarau praised Turaki’s early actions since assuming leadership of the party, noting that his efforts to stabilize the PDP’s national headquarters after the recent National Elective Convention in Ibadan showed determination and commitment.

The former minister also assured the National Working Committee that experienced members of the party would continue to offer guidance and support as the PDP attempts to rebuild its political influence.

He further observed that some Nigerians have begun comparing past PDP administrations with the current political climate, suggesting that such comparisons may influence public opinion ahead of future elections.

The meeting concluded with renewed calls for unity among party members, with leaders stressing the need to focus on rebuilding the PDP’s structures across the country.

Commentary and Analysis

The gathering of PDP elders around the new leadership signals an effort by the opposition party to consolidate its internal structure before the next electoral cycle.

Historically, political parties that maintain unity among senior members often have a stronger organizational foundation when preparing for national elections. By bringing former governors and ministers into strategic discussions, the PDP leadership appears to be leveraging experience to guide its rebuilding process.

Another important aspect of the meeting is the emphasis on learning from the party’s past governance period. The PDP ruled Nigeria for sixteen years before losing power in 2015, and its leaders now appear determined to analyze what previously worked and what led to its decline.

For the PDP, the road to 2027 will likely depend on two critical factors: rebuilding trust among voters and maintaining internal stability within the party.

If the current leadership succeeds in achieving both goals, the party could emerge as a stronger contender in the next general election cycle.
