In a decisive political shift, former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha has formally left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a new chapter in his political journey.

Gossip News Now reports that Ihedioha completed his ADC registration on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Mbutu Ward, Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area, receiving membership card Number 001—an emblematic gesture highlighting his commitment to the party.

The registration process was overseen by local party officials, with Ward Secretary Prince Obinna Opara facilitating the formalities and Ward Chairman Chief Alex Ahamuefula presenting the card to the former governor.

“Our people want leaders who listen, who serve, and who place the collective interest above personal ambition. I believe the ADC provides a credible platform to pursue these objectives,” Ihedioha said, explaining the motivation behind his transition.

Highlighting his focus on grassroots engagement, Ihedioha emphasized that registering at the ward level was a deliberate effort to show solidarity with local communities and a commitment to participatory governance.

The ceremony drew attention from a mix of local and national figures, including Evangelist Dr. Obi Nwaigwe, the Mayor of Mbutu, and Hon. Jonathan Egbule, Chairman of Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area. National ADC representatives included Sir Bon Unachukwu, National Vice Chairman (South-East); Maigari Bello Kasimu, Deputy Diaspora Coordinator; and Uko Nkole, Coordinator of the Nigerian Former Legislators Forum.

Unachukwu described Ihedioha’s membership as a milestone for ADC’s reach in the South-East and nationwide.

“The ADC is delighted to welcome a former governor and seasoned public servant whose joining strengthens our political capacity and appeal,” he stated.

Imo State ADC Chairman, Prof. James Okoroma, led the State Executive Committee in officially receiving Ihedioha, highlighting the significance of his move in reinforcing the party’s internal democracy and bolstering grassroots mobilisation.

Analysts suggest that Ihedioha’s decision reflects a strategic positioning ahead of upcoming elections, with the ADC increasingly emerging as a viable alternative for seasoned politicians seeking a platform aligned with accountability and responsive governance. By choosing ADC, Ihedioha signals a shift toward a party structure that emphasises both local engagement and broader political influence.

This alignment may also have implications for the PDP, potentially influencing political calculations and alliances across Imo State and the wider South-East region. Observers note that high-profile defections like Ihedioha’s often energize local party bases while reshaping perceptions of political competitiveness.
