Former Ogun Governor’s Wife, Madam Lucia Onabanjo, Dies at 100

Spread the love

Madam Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, the widow of Ogun State’s first civilian governor, Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, has passed away at the age of 100, marking the end of a remarkable century-long life dedicated to family, faith, and service.

The news of her death was shared by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo, who described her mother’s passing as a “transition to glory.” In an official family statement, she said:

“The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo announces with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Chief (Mrs) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925–2026) was called to glory on Monday, January 11. We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength, and faith she leaves behind.”

Life and Career

Born in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Madam Onabanjo relocated to Lagos around age 10, where she completed her early schooling. She later attended the Teachers’ Training College in Yaba, Lagos, embarking on a career in education that spanned 22 years. Her dedication to teaching not only shaped her professional identity but also informed the values of discipline, service, and commitment she instilled in her family.

Despite her husband’s prominence in Nigerian politics, Madam Onabanjo was admired for her modest lifestyle. She maintained a simple home, adhered to traditional dietary practices, and focused on family life while supporting her husband’s political endeavors. She emphasized the importance of hands-on parenting and proper home training, often expressing concern over contemporary trends that, in her view, allowed children too much autonomy.

Faith and Community Engagement

A devout Catholic, Madam Onabanjo served as Iya Ijo at St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral in Ijebu-Ode, actively participating in church and community affairs. Her faith played a central role in her life, guiding her interactions with family, neighbors, and parishioners alike.

In October 2025, she celebrated her centenary, receiving national recognition. President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to her during the milestone, calling her “a reflection of grace, wisdom, and enduring service,” and applauding her resilience, moral fortitude, and devotion to family and community.

Legacy

Madam Lucia Onabanjo’s passing marks the conclusion of a life defined by humility, faith, and unwavering commitment to service. Her legacy endures not only in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren but also in the lives she touched through education, church activities, and community engagement. Her story serves as an inspiration for future generations on the values of faith, family, and dedicated service.
