Fresh security concerns have emerged in parts of Yagba West following reports that armed men abducted several residents along the Omi-Odo Ara Road corridor. The incident has intensified fears among locals already worried about a growing pattern of violent attacks in rural communities across Kogi State.
Details surrounding the latest attack remain limited, but residents said the incident occurred late in December 2025. While the number of people taken has not been officially confirmed, community members reported that security agencies were quickly informed after the abduction.
Following the incident, residents in surrounding villages were advised to remain vigilant. Local leaders urged people to reduce unnecessary travel, stay alert, and immediately report any suspicious activity to security operatives.
The new kidnapping case came barely a day after another violent incident shook the nearby town of Odo‑Ere within the same local government area. That earlier attack reportedly took place at night when armed men stormed the community and abducted several individuals.
Among those taken during the Odo-Ere raid were Engr. Shina Ajere, Kehinde Afolabi, Damilola Ogun, and a woman widely known in the community as Iya Lara. Residents described the assault as frightening, noting that the attackers fired gunshots while moving from one house to another.
Community observers later revealed that the assailants also attempted to break into another residence in the area. However, although the building bore visible bullet marks after the attack, the gunmen were unable to gain entry into the apartment.
Local sources believe that more people may have been abducted during the raid than initially reported. The confusion and panic that followed the attack made it difficult to determine the exact number of victims at the time.
Concerned residents from Odo-Ere and neighbouring communities have since called on both the state government and security agencies to intensify patrol operations in the region. Many of them say additional security personnel are urgently needed to protect lives and property.
They also appealed for immediate intervention to secure the safe release of those kidnapped. According to community leaders, quick and decisive action from authorities could help restore confidence among residents who now live in fear.
The recent attacks highlight the growing insecurity affecting rural areas of the state. Communities across Yagba West have reportedly experienced repeated incursions by armed groups in recent months.
Adding to the concerns is another kidnapping case reported elsewhere in the state. A pastor from Living Faith Church Worldwide was earlier abducted while travelling to his farm in Okoro Gbedde.
According to reports, the cleric was eventually released days later without harm. Sources said he was later found in Aiyetoro Gbedde and no ransom payment was confirmed.
For residents across the affected communities, the repeated kidnappings have created a climate of anxiety and uncertainty. Many people say daily activities such as farming and travel are now approached with caution.
Commentary and Analysis
The recent series of kidnappings in Kogi State reflects a broader national challenge involving rural security and the capacity of local authorities to respond quickly to threats.
Experts often point to several factors driving these incidents, including weak surveillance in remote communities, limited security presence, and the mobility of armed groups operating across multiple local government areas.
In many rural parts of Nigeria, long distances between settlements and inadequate infrastructure make it easier for attackers to strike and escape before help arrives. This has prompted repeated calls for stronger community policing initiatives and improved intelligence gathering.
Analysts believe that strengthening security patrols, investing in rapid-response units, and improving cooperation between residents and law-enforcement agencies could help reduce the frequency of such attacks.
Until those measures are implemented effectively, communities like those in Yagba West may continue to face persistent security threats.
