Fubara Impeachment: ‘Wike Seeks To Install His Loyalist As Governor’

Political strategist Baba Yusuf has alleged that Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is attempting to remove Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, in order to install a loyal ally in his place.

Yusuf made the claim on Friday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, describing the Rivers State crisis as a “fight to finish,” particularly in light of the impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy.

He stated, “Wike has taken this stubborn position despite multiple interventions by President Bola Tinubu in his favour. The situation escalated to the point where the President had to consider suspending democratic processes in Rivers State for six months. Clearly, this is a fight to the finish.

“Observing the current developments, we see frequent shifts in position; some lawmakers change stance one day and reverse the next.

“Under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), Chapter Six, Section 191, the Speaker of the House assumes office if both the governor and deputy are impeached.

“Wike aims to use this process to remove Fubara and install his loyalist. If this plan succeeds, Martin Amaewhule, Speaker of the Rivers State Assembly, would become acting governor, as provided under the Constitution.”
