The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, has criticized Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing his emergence as a mistake and insisting that the state has never witnessed the kind of political turmoil currently unfolding.
Speaking during Thursday’s plenary session, Amaewhule stated that Governor Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Nma Odu, pose a serious threat to democratic governance in Rivers State.
He accused the governor of intentionally weakening constitutional structures and sidelining the legislative arm, declaring, “Fubara is a mistake; Rivers State has never had it this bad.”
Amaewhule expressed concern that the state has yet to present its 2026 Appropriation Bill, calling the situation both unprecedented and shameful.
According to him, Rivers State now stands as the only state in Nigeria—and possibly the entire West African region—that has failed to present a budget for the new fiscal year.
He described it as unimaginable that, in this modern era, a major state like Rivers has neither submitted nor passed its 2026 budget. He added that the Assembly would formally communicate its position to Governor Fubara and his deputy within seven days.
The Speaker also accused Fubara of publicly telling his supporters that the House of Assembly is powerless, allegedly mocking lawmakers as “toothless bulldogs” incapable of upholding constitutional authority.
Amaewhule said the current situation represents “a sad chapter for Nigeria’s democracy,” arguing that the governor and his deputy have consistently shown disregard for procedures and democratic principles.
He warned that continued defiance of constitutional duties could lead to serious consequences for governance in the state.
