The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has affirmed Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the official leader of the party in Rivers State.
Yilwatda’s statement comes amid ongoing tension between Governor Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over political influence and control within the state.
Since his defection to the APC, Fubara has referred to himself as the “001” of the party in Rivers State. However, Wike has publicly rejected that claim, asserting that he maintains significant control over the state’s political structure and highlighting the APC-PDP collaboration in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
Addressing the matter during an interview on Channels Television’s Hard Copy, Yilwatda clarified the party’s position, emphasising both recognition of Fubara and adherence to democratic processes.
“Governor Fubara is the leader of the APC in Rivers State,” Yilwatda said, “but he must coordinate with others in the state to ensure unity.”
The APC chairman underlined that his personal support would follow the outcome of the party’s primary election.
“I do not unilaterally choose whom to support in the state’s primaries,” Yilwatda added. “If Fubara wins the APC primary, he will have my full support. If he loses, I will extend my support to the candidate who emerges victorious and continue to work with them for the party’s success.”
