Legal expert Obed Agu has voiced concern over the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, describing it as detrimental to effective governance.
During an interview on Arise Television on Friday, Agu criticised the Rivers State House of Assembly for continuing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara despite intervention efforts by President Bola Tinubu.
He explained that while courts cannot prevent any arm of government from performing its constitutional duties, they can still review proceedings and issue orders where necessary.
Agu said, “I want to lend my voice to the majority of Nigerians who have called for a political resolution to the crisis in Rivers State.
“It is unbecoming that even after the President has intervened politically, members of the House of Assembly continue with impeachment actions. This is not helping governance in Rivers State.
“Every Nigerian understands that our Constitution upholds the separation of powers among the executive, legislature, and judiciary. While the courts cannot stop any arm from performing its constitutional functions, they can review actions and make orders where necessary. This is exactly what the High Court in Port Harcourt has done.”
