Fulham sealed their spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Craven Cottage on Tuesday night.
The Premier League side were made to work hard by their League One opponents, eventually prevailing 5-4 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time.
Defender Issa Diop netted the decisive spot-kick in sudden death, while goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte emerged as the hero, producing three crucial saves during the shootout.
Wycombe made a dream start, stunning the home crowd in the 4th minute when former Fulham striker Cauley Woodrow fired a low strike past Lecomte from outside the box. The early goal spurred Fulham into action, but the visitors defended resolutely to preserve their lead until halftime.
Marco Silva’s men eventually drew level three minutes after the restart as Josh King scored his first goal for the club, flicking home from a corner to make it 1-1.
Despite dominating possession and creating several clear chances, Fulham were repeatedly denied by Wycombe goalkeeper Will Norris, who delivered an outstanding performance to keep the game alive.
In the penalty shootout, Fulham converted their first four attempts before Norris saved efforts from Ryan Sessegnon and Jonah Kusi-Asare, giving Wycombe hope. However, Lecomte’s brilliance proved decisive as he denied Ewan Henderson, Fred Onyedinma, and Donnell McNeilly to send Fulham through.
Elsewhere, Brentford cruised into the last eight with a 5-0 thrashing of Grimsby Town, while Cardiff City edged Wrexham 2-1 to book their place in the next round.
The remaining fourth-round fixtures continue on Wednesday, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City all in action as the race for a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals heats up.
