Nigerian security agencies have reportedly wrapped up investigations into an alleged coup plot targeted at forcefully removing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, with no fewer than 40 suspects identified across the military, police, and civilian population.
According to reports, those named include senior military officers, a serving police officer, and several civilians accused of playing roles in intelligence gathering, financing, logistics, and propaganda activities linked to the alleged plot.
A report by Premium Times, citing security sources, disclosed that 13 suspects were apprehended by the State Security Service (SSS). These include two military personnel—one of them retired—one police officer, and 10 civilians.
In addition, 16 military officers were arrested for alleged direct involvement in the plot. Two civilians were reportedly detained for reconnaissance duties, another two for allegedly inciting civil unrest to justify the coup, while five others were linked to funding operations.
Security sources further revealed that one detained soldier briefly escaped custody but was later recaptured by SSS operatives in Bauchi State.
Investigation Concluded, Court-Martial Awaited
The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that investigations into the alleged coup plot have been concluded and forwarded to the appropriate superior authorities in accordance with existing military regulations.
The military described the findings as uncovering “several officers with allegations of attempting to overthrow the government,” noting that such conduct violates the ethics, values, and professional standards of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
A source familiar with the matter disclosed that at least 25 military officers and personnel are expected to face court-martial proceedings over the alleged attempt.
Meanwhile, an unspecified number of civilians remain in custody and are being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the SSS for alleged roles in financing, coordination, and logistics.
Alleged Coup Plan Uncovered
Investigators revealed that the alleged plot initially sought to disrupt the transition of power from former President Muhammadu Buhari to President Tinubu on May 29, 2023. However, the plan reportedly failed at the time due to funding shortages and logistical challenges.
Intelligence sources said the plan was allegedly revived in 2025 following claims that former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, transferred close to ₦1 billion into three bank accounts operated by a Bureau de Change operator.
Retired Major General Adamu was identified as a central figure in the alleged conspiracy. Alongside Sylva and three other suspects, he is said to be currently at large. One fleeing suspect has reportedly been traced to South America, though further details were withheld for security reasons.
Top Government Officials Allegedly Targeted
Security sources alleged that the plot included plans to assassinate President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.
According to one source, the conspirators intended to strike when all the targeted officials were within the country.
Senior military figures, including service chiefs, Guards Brigade commanders, and other strategic officers, were also reportedly marked as targets. Intelligence reports further suggested that informants within the Presidential Villa were monitoring the movements of key officials.
Investigators also disclosed that some officers were assigned to take control of strategic facilities, including the Presidential Villa, Niger Barracks, the Armed Forces of Nigeria Headquarters, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Suspects Include Senior Military Officers, Civilians
Among those listed are senior officers such as Brigadier General M.A. Sadiq of the Army Headquarters Garrison, Colonel M.A. Ma’aji of the Defence Space Administration, and Lieutenant Colonel S. Bappah of the 525 Signal Regiment.
Other suspects include several lieutenant colonels, majors, captains, lieutenants, and non-commissioned officers across different military formations.
Civilian suspects named include Umoru Zekeri, identified as a Julius Berger electrician at the Presidential Villa; Ali Isah, a Villa ambulance driver; and Stanley Kingsley Amandi, an actor allegedly recruited for propaganda activities.
As of press time, details surrounding six other suspects were still unclear.
