Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will face Ghana in the semifinals of the WAFU-B U-17 Tournament after playing out a goalless draw with Burkina Faso in their final Group B match on Saturday in Yamoussoukro.
Led by coach Manu Garba, the Eaglets topped their group on goal difference, with the tournament also serving as a qualifier for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
The team had signaled their intent earlier with a commanding 4-1 victory over Benin Republic in their opening fixture. Against Burkina Faso, however, Nigeria found themselves frustrated despite dominating possession.
Goalkeeper Great Edafe was called into action in the 20th minute, pulling off a fine save to deny the Burkinabe. Burkina Faso’s defenders stood firm, closing down spaces and limiting Nigeria’s attacking threat.
The second half provided nervy moments for both sides. Burkina Faso nearly conceded an own goal in the 55th minute when a miscued clearance rattled the woodwork. Later, Nigeria’s best opportunity fell to substitute Emeka Nnalue in the 80th minute, but his low drive drifted narrowly wide after a dazzling solo run.
Though unable to find a breakthrough, the result was enough to secure top spot and set up a highly anticipated semifinal against archrivals Ghana.
For fans, the clash promises more than just a path to the final—it rekindles one of African football’s fiercest rivalries, as the young Eaglets look to assert themselves against the Black Starlets.
