The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the resignation of Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as “very embarrassing.”
Gossip News Now reports that Governor Diri officially resigned from the PDP on October 15, though his next political move remains unclear amid widespread speculation that he may soon join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Diri, who had been serving as Chairman of the PDP Zoning Committee ahead of the party’s elective national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, resigned unexpectedly, sending shockwaves through the party.
Speaking during a media chat in Abuja on Friday, Wike expressed disappointment over the development, calling it a major setback for the party’s leadership.
“It is very embarrassing,” Wike said. “The governor was the chairman of the convention committee and also the chairman of the zoning committee. Even though I knew from the beginning that they were all playing games.”
Meanwhile, reports have emerged suggesting that Governor Diri is finalising plans to defect to the APC.
According to The Punch, the Bayelsa governor is delaying the move as negotiations continue among top APC figures — including former Governor Timipre Sylva and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri — over control of the party’s structure in the state.
The development has intensified political tension in Bayelsa, with PDP leaders condemning Diri’s exit as a betrayal of the party that brought him to power.
However, senior APC chieftains have hinted that Diri’s defection could be formalised as early as next week, noting that discussions were in advanced stages.
“Talks are well advanced,” one APC source confirmed, dismissing rumours that resistance from Sylva and Lokpobiri might derail the governor’s entry into the ruling party.
If confirmed, Diri’s move to the APC would mark one of the most significant political realignments in the South-South ahead of the 2027 general elections.
