Gov Yusuf: ‘If His Defection Is Motivated by Huge Funds to Governors, Then It’s a Shame’ – Dungurawa

Kano State Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP), Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, has reacted to circulating rumours about Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s possible defection, describing the NNPP as one of the most compliant, structured, and legitimate political parties in Nigeria.

Speaking with Arewa Punch on Thursday, Dungurawa voiced his surprise over the reports, stating that the party had not done anything that would justify the governor contemplating leaving.

“There is no political party in this country that meets the standards of law and legitimacy like the NNPP,” he said. “I honestly don’t understand why the Kano State Governor would be planning to abandon the party.”

Dungurawa highlighted the NNPP’s strong national presence, noting that it maintains operational offices across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. He stressed that the party’s structures and leadership remain firmly in place nationwide.

He called on Governor Yusuf to reconsider any thoughts of defecting, warning that leaving the party would amount to a major political blunder.

“This will be the greatest mistake he will make if he decides to leave the NNPP,” he cautioned.

Addressing speculation of a rift between the party and the governor, Dungurawa insisted that the NNPP has no internal disputes that would trigger such a move.
“As far as I know, the NNPP is stable, and there is no existing conflict between the party and the governor,” he stated.

Kwankwaso Will Not Defect — NNPP Chairman Insists

Dungurawa also responded to rumours suggesting that the party’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, may be planning to decamp to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He dismissed the claims as baseless, emphasizing Kwankwaso’s deep loyalty and pride in the NNPP.

“Why would Kwankwaso do that?” he asked. “He built this party from the ground up, and under his leadership, NNPP secured victories in Kano, Taraba, Bauchi, and Plateau.”

He added that anyone who visits Kwankwaso would immediately notice the NNPP flag displayed prominently in his office, reaffirming his commitment to the party.

Why Yusuf May Be Considering Leaving — Dungurawa’s Analysis

Speaking on why Governor Yusuf might be contemplating defection, Dungurawa suggested two possible reasons.

First, he speculated that the governor may be under pressure from agencies such as the ICPC or EFCC.
“Perhaps he is feeling threatened,” he said. “But even then, others have been accused of worse.”

Second, he hinted that financial inducement could be a factor.
“Maybe it is because of the huge funds being sent to governors,” he said. “If that is the reason, then it is truly shameful.”

Dungurawa reminded the governor of the overwhelming support he received from Kano citizens under the NNPP platform.
“Kano people intentionally rejected the APC and voted for him through the NNPP,” he said. “He won in 2023, and by God’s grace, we are positioned to win again in 2027.”

He urged the governor to stay committed to the platform that brought him to power.
“He has performed well in Kano, which is why I find it difficult to understand why he is considering leaving. He should reflect deeply and remain with the party that the people trusted,” Dungurawa concluded.
