The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), under the leadership of its founder, Boniface Aniebonam, has rejected claims that Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, abandoned the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the party for selfish motives.
In a statement released by the party’s National Vice Chairman for the North-West, Sani Danmasani, the NNPP explained that Yusuf’s defection was driven by attempts to subjugate and undermine the influence of former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Danmasani insisted that the real betrayal came from Kwankwaso, alleging that repeated efforts by Yusuf, in his capacity as NNPP leader, to restore peace and unity were met with arrogance, self-interest, and political greed.
The remarks were made in response to recent comments by the Secretary of the party’s Board of Trustees, Buba Galadima, concerning Yusuf’s decision to defect.
According to Danmasani, the emotional reactions of both Galadima and Kwankwaso suggest that Yusuf’s exit has left them deeply unsettled.
“We appeal to the families and close associates of Kwankwaso and Galadima to step in before the situation worsens,” he said.
“A careful assessment of Galadima’s appearance on Arise Television indicates that he may be experiencing intense emotional strain.
“Governor Yusuf’s move to the APC has clearly affected both Galadima and Kwankwaso, with their bitterness and anguish evident in their public statements.
“The level of distress is so severe that, without timely intervention, it could lead to depression. It is highly likely that these individuals are currently suffering sleepless nights.”
The party further noted that a striking element of Galadima’s interview was his narration of a strenuous road journey from Enugu Airport to Umuawulu in Anambra State, the hometown of NNPP founder Aniebonam.
“Galadima recounted how he arrived in Anambra around 2 a.m. to meet Aniebonam in a bid to secure a political platform for Kwankwaso and his associates ahead of the 2023 general elections.
“It is therefore ironic that Yusuf, who benefited greatly from this risky journey, is now being accused of betraying the NNPP family by aligning with their political rival, former Kano State governor and APC chieftain, Abdullahi Ganduje,” the statement said.
Danmasani further alleged that Kwankwaso and Galadima, who are now lamenting betrayal, were the same individuals who freely used the NNPP platform to contest the 2023 elections.
“They are the very people who betrayed Aniebonam while attempting to hijack the party he founded in 2001. Despite their ongoing efforts to unlawfully seize control of the party structure, they have the audacity to label Yusuf a traitor.
“One cannot help but wonder why Kwankwaso and Galadima are so agitated and disruptive, as though unaware that divine justice operates in its own way,” he added.
The party concluded that Yusuf’s decision to defect was an act of self-preservation, aimed at freeing himself from undue control and persistent interference by Kwankwaso in the administration of Kano State.
