Senior aides to Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, have reiterated that his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is final and will be formally announced soon.
One of the governor’s close aides told Daily Trust that the decision is not a matter confined to Kano politics but is primarily being coordinated at the level of the Presidency.
Earlier reports suggested that plans had been made for Yusuf to be the first official registrant under the APC’s new online membership drive in Kano. Those arrangements were reportedly postponed to allow the governor to meet key APC figures in the state, including former governor and immediate past APC national chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, to secure their blessings.
However, the aide dismissed such claims as speculative. He said, “No fixed date has been set. Those claiming the defection was to happen today (Monday) are spreading rumours. The decision is irreversible, and the formal announcement will come once all arrangements are finalised. We are not rushing, but everything is in place—it’s just a matter of time.”
Addressing suggestions that the defection is contingent on consulting Kano APC leaders, the aide clarified, “This move is not dependent on local consultations. It is a matter being handled at the presidency level. Our joining the APC is between the governor and the president, or the party officials designated by the president. It is not a Kano affair.”
He added that Governor Yusuf is still engaging in consultations as a responsible political leader to ensure his loyalists from the NNPP are accommodated while avoiding friction within the APC in Kano.
The aide further emphasised that the governor’s decision is guided more by governance considerations than personal ambition. “Political ambition is, of course, important, but the NNPP is no longer a viable platform—it exists only on paper. The main objective of His Excellency is to ensure Kano State benefits optimally from the federal government,” he said.
