Taraba State’s political scene is poised for a major shift as Governor Agbu Kefas prepares to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with sources confirming that the move will be formalized on November 19.

An insider from the APC National Working Committee told The Guardian that arrangements are complete for a mega rally in Jalingo to receive the governor. APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda is expected to lead party leaders in welcoming Kefas into the ruling party.

“Everything is already set for the Taraba governor’s arrival into the APC fold,” the official said, adding that the switch had been discussed privately at a leadership meeting on Wednesday at the APC national secretariat in Abuja. The source described the move as a “masterstroke” orchestrated behind the scenes by Yilwatda.

Speculation about Kefas’ political direction intensified earlier this week when he addressed both APC and PDP stakeholders at the Banquet Hall of TY Danjuma House in Jalingo.

“Yes, a rumour is indeed circulating, and I’m also hearing that rumour. Sometimes, when a rumour keeps moving like that, it makes somebody think that it is something good. I am working on it to see that it becomes a reality. By the grace of God, in a few days after next week, you will hear from me,” Kefas said.

He also called on political actors across all parties to prioritize unity and development over partisan differences:

“Whether you are from APC, PDP, or any other party, we are committed to doing justice. Let us forgive one another and move the state forward.”

APC Stakeholders Mobilize Ahead of Kefas’ Defection

In anticipation of the formal announcement, key APC figures in Taraba have rallied behind the governor. A weekend meeting at the residence of Danladi Baido in Jalingo brought together a wide coalition of APC leaders, including the state chairman, APC Youth Forum, “Concerned Citizens,” APC Like Minds, and elders from all 16 local government areas and two development zones.

The gathering aimed to reaffirm loyalty to the governor and mobilize support for his anticipated defection. Stakeholders described the move as timely and strategic, noting that Kefas’ entry into the APC would enhance Taraba’s political relevance at the federal level.

They also highlighted potential benefits, including increased federal presence, infrastructural growth, economic development, and improved human capital.
