In a notable political development in Kaduna State, Muhammad Bello, former Director-General of Governor Uba Sani’s 2023 Campaign Council, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Bello, who also held commissioner positions in Kaduna until his resignation in July 2025, has now taken on a key role within the ADC as a member of the committee reviewing the party’s constitution. Observers say this move highlights growing political shifts in the state, particularly in the context of tensions between Governor Uba Sani and ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
In an official letter dated January 7, addressed to the APC Chairman of Dogarawa Ward in Sabon Gari Local Government Area, Bello formally announced:
“This is to inform you of my decision to terminate my membership of the APC with immediate effect.”
He added a note of appreciation for his time in the party, stating:
“I wish to acknowledge and appreciate the cordial and productive relationship we enjoyed throughout my time in the party.”
From Cabinet to Opposition
Bello’s political trajectory has been closely tied to Kaduna’s leadership landscape. He previously held the traditional title of Mainan Zazzau and served as Commissioner for Education before transitioning to the Information Ministry. His resignation in July 2025 marked the end of his direct involvement in Governor Sani’s cabinet, with Ahmed Maiyaki assuming the Information portfolio thereafter.
Political analysts note that Bello’s defection may signal a broader realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, as his experience as Uba Sani’s campaign DG gives him considerable influence within local political networks.
Strategic Implications for ADC
By joining ADC and taking part in the constitution review, Bello positions himself as a key architect in shaping the party’s internal framework and strategic direction in Kaduna. Analysts suggest that his move could strengthen the ADC’s appeal among moderate APC supporters disillusioned by the current political climate, potentially altering power dynamics in the state.
“Bello’s deep roots in Kaduna’s political machinery make him a significant acquisition for any party looking to gain traction ahead of future elections,” one political observer noted.
Commentary
Bello’s defection underscores a recurring theme in Nigerian politics: shifting allegiances driven by personal ambition, ideological recalibration, and local power considerations. While his resignation from APC may seem abrupt, it also reflects broader dissatisfaction among mid-level political figures within ruling parties who seek more influence or alignment with emerging opposition platforms. The ADC, with such strategic entrants, could become a more formidable contender in Kaduna’s evolving political landscape.
