Fresh indications from within Kano’s political circle suggest that Governor Abba Yusuf’s planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reached a point of no return, despite resistance from his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
A highly placed source at the Kano Government House disclosed that the governor’s move away from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) is “irreversible,” signaling a definitive political shift in the state.
Kwankwaso, a former Kano governor and leader of the influential Kwankwasiyya Movement, had earlier cautioned that Yusuf would have to relinquish his seat if he leaves the NNPP. According to him, the electoral mandate belongs to the party and not the individual office holder.
“If he defects, he must leave office. The mandate belongs to the party,” Kwankwaso was quoted as saying.
However, insiders insist that Governor Yusuf’s decision stands firm and is backed by substantial political strength within the state. The governor is said to command the loyalty of nine out of Kano’s 13 members in the House of Representatives.
Additionally, 20 of the 27 members of the Kano State House of Assembly — including the Speaker and other principal officers — are reportedly aligned with him. At the grassroots level, 42 of the state’s 44 local government chairmen are also believed to be on his side.
“The train has left the station,” the government source remarked, emphasizing the finality of the governor’s position.
In what observers describe as a calculated move, Yusuf is said to have tightened his grip on the NNPP’s state structure following the suspension of former state chairman, Hashim Dungurawa — a decision that was upheld by the Kano State High Court.
The insider further claimed that the NNPP National Working Committee may have risked contempt of court by dissolving Kano’s state executive committees despite the standing judicial ruling.
Meanwhile, Kwankwaso has signaled a willingness to negotiate political alliances ahead of future elections, but only under conditions that secure him a prominent role. Speaking to supporters at his Miller Road residence in Kano, he stated that any partnership must guarantee either a presidential or vice-presidential ticket.
“We are open to partnerships, but only on terms that guarantee senior roles,” he reportedly told his followers.
