A top government insider has confirmed that Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf is set to officially join the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a decisive break from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), despite objections from party leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Kwankwaso, a former governor and head of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, had warned that any defection by Yusuf would necessitate vacating his position, emphasizing that the mandate legally belongs to the party.
“If he defects, he must leave office. The mandate belongs to the party,” Kwankwaso reportedly stated.
However, a senior official at Kano Government House told Leadership that the governor’s decision to join the APC is now “irreversible.”
The source revealed that Yusuf enjoys overwhelming support from key political structures across the state, including:
- Nine of the 13 House of Representatives members from Kano
- 20 of 27 State House of Assembly members, including the Speaker and principal officers
- 42 out of 44 local government chairmen
“The train has left the station,” the source said.
In a strategic move to strengthen his control over state politics, Governor Yusuf reportedly consolidated power within the NNPP state structure after the suspension of former state chairman Hashim Dungurawa, a decision upheld by the Kano State High Court.
The source added that the NNPP’s National Working Committee risked contempt by dissolving Kano’s state executive committees despite the court ruling.
Meanwhile, Kwankwaso has indicated that he remains open to alliances with political parties willing to offer him top leadership positions, including either the presidential or vice-presidential slot.
“We are open to partnerships, but only on terms that guarantee senior roles,” he told supporters at his Miller Road residence in Kano.
