On Monday night, intense gunfire and explosions were reported near the Miraflores Palace in Caracas, raising security concerns days after former President Nicolás Maduro was reportedly detained and transported to the United States.
Local media outlets and unverified footage shared on social media captured scenes of heavy shooting around the presidential complex. Residents described a tense atmosphere as security forces quickly mobilized to secure the area.
CNN obtained videos showing flashes in the night sky, believed to be anti-aircraft fire and drone activity over the capital. Other clips circulating online depicted armed men carrying heavy weaponry, military convoys, and security patrols stationed on streets leading to the palace. Residents were seen taking cover as authorities increased security measures.
According to local sources, the gunfire reportedly began around 8 p.m. local time after unidentified drones were spotted near the palace, which added to the confusion and heightened tensions.
The White House has officially denied any involvement in the events.
CNN later reported that the incident appeared to result from a “misunderstanding,” citing discussions among paramilitary groups associated with the former regime. Confusion among different security units operating near the palace is believed to have triggered the exchange of fire.
By late Monday night, there were no confirmed reports of injuries or fatalities. Officials had not released statements regarding potential damage, arrests, or the precise cause of the security breach.
It remains unclear whether the gunfire was directly connected to Venezuela’s ongoing political crisis.
The reported incident occurred just hours after Vice President Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as acting president, following the detention of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a U.S. military operation over the past weekend.
