Nollywood actress Victoria Inyama has opened up about her journey of healing after surviving an abusive marriage, revealing that she was eventually rescued from the toxic relationship by the police.

In an interview with Saturday Punch, the actress explained that her recovery process was rooted in understanding trauma through psychological knowledge, alongside practicing forgiveness, gratitude, and letting go.

Inyama also reflected on the wider issue of domestic violence in Nigeria, noting that it is often downplayed or normalized, particularly when the abuser is wealthy or influential. She further stressed that abuse is not limited to men, pointing out that women can also be perpetrators.

Speaking on her own ordeal, the mother of three disclosed that she did not leave her marriage voluntarily but was instead removed by law enforcement officers. She encouraged other survivors of abuse to prioritize healing and self-growth, warning that unresolved trauma can affect both mental and physical health.

“Focus on releasing pain, improving yourself, and making the most of the life ahead,” she advised women seeking to rebuild after years of silence.

Inyama shares three children with her ex-husband, Godwin Okri. In 2019, she won full custody of them after a lengthy court battle, despite initially seeking shared custody. She later revealed that the decision was influenced both by her ex-husband’s actions and the children’s preference to live with her.

The actress has since expressed deep gratitude for her children, describing them as her “diamonds born out of the fire” of her past struggles.
