Nollywood actor and filmmaker Jamiu Azeez has reacted to online criticism following reports that he converted from Islam to Christianity.
According to Gossip News Now, the controversy erupted after a video surfaced showing him attending a church service dressed in white.
The clip quickly went viral, sparking questions from some members of the Muslim community about his faith, with calls from some quarters that he should consider changing his name.
The post generated a mix of reactions from fans and critics across social media platforms.
On Sunday, January 4, Jamiu addressed the situation via his social media accounts. He shared screenshots of messages and comments he had received, highlighting the intense reactions sparked by the video.
He emphasised that his personal choices should not be subjected to public interference and clarified that he had never officially announced a change in religion.
Jamiu described his faith as a private matter and said it should not be a topic for judgment. He even lightheartedly noted that he could wear any spiritual attire if he wished.
On his Instagram story, he wrote:
“It’s only in Nigeria that people get so worked up about another person’s life. Imagine telling a man in his 40s how to live his life. I posted myself in white garment on the crossover night and mehn, the comments I’ve been seeing on blogs, especially Facebook, are crazy. Some even slid into my DMs to drag me… I can choose to practise any religion and that should not be anyone’s problem. I never even came out to say I have converted o.”
Jamiu’s response has been widely shared online, with many praising him for standing his ground and asserting his right to personal freedom in matters of faith.
