Nollywood actor and filmmaker Jamiu Azeez has responded to recent online criticism following reports suggesting he converted from Islam to Christianity. The controversy began after a video of him attending a church service in a white outfit went viral.
The clip sparked discussions online, with some members of the Muslim community questioning his faith and even suggesting that he should consider changing his name. Social media platforms quickly became flooded with a mix of reactions from fans and critics alike.
On Sunday, January 4, Jamiu addressed the speculation through his social media accounts. He shared screenshots of messages and comments he had received, highlighting the intensity of the reactions the video had provoked.
He clarified that his personal choices regarding faith were private matters and should not be subject to public judgment. Jamiu emphasised that he had never officially announced any conversion and described his spiritual life as a personal issue, one that no one else should interfere with.
In a lighthearted remark, he noted that he could wear any religious attire if he wished, underscoring his point about personal freedom.
Sharing his thoughts on Instagram, he wrote:
“It’s only in Nigeria that people get so worked up about another person’s life. Imagine telling a man in his 40s how to live. I posted myself in white garment on the crossover night and mehn, the comments I’ve been seeing on blogs, especially Facebook, are crazy. Some even slid into my DMs to drag me… I can choose to practise any religion and that should not be anyone’s problem. I never even came out to say I have converted o.”
Jamiu’s candid response has been widely shared online, with many praising him for standing firm and asserting his right to personal freedom in matters of faith.
