Nene Aderigbigbe, mother of Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, has opened up about why she decided to sever ties with three long-time friends, citing personal boundaries and the need to protect her peace of mind.

In a candid Instagram post, Nene explained that each friendship ended for different reasons, all of which left her feeling uncomfortable or betrayed. She admitted to questioning whether her responses were too strong at the time, but ultimately believed the decisions were necessary.

One friendship collapsed after a serious breach of trust. Nene revealed that a friend had shared a private conversation she had with her husband without her consent. “Personal conversations between friends should remain confidential,” she emphasized, explaining that this betrayal led her to cut all contact permanently.

The second friendship ended due to uncomfortable interactions with the friend’s husband. He frequently contacted Nene with personal details about his life and activities, which she found intrusive. Nene stressed that her bond was solely with the wife, and any engagement with him was unwelcome, prompting her to distance herself completely.

The final friendship deteriorated because Nene felt emotionally drained. The friend, married for over two decades, regularly called to discuss her marital problems. Over time, Nene realized she could not continue to act as a sounding board for issues she had no way of solving.

Reflecting on all three situations, Nene stated that she did not feel obligated to explain her choices. “To this day, they don’t fully understand why I stopped speaking to them,” she said. “But these decisions were necessary to protect my peace of mind.”
