Nigeria’s bid to return to the FIFA World Cup has come to a painful conclusion after the Super Eagles were knocked out of the qualification race by DR Congo in a dramatic playoff encounter decided by penalties.
According to Gossip News Now, the decisive match took place at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, where the Nigerian team eventually lost 4–3 in the penalty shootout, ending their hopes of participating in the 2026 global tournament scheduled to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The match initially appeared to swing in Nigeria’s favour when Frank Onyeka found the net with a well-taken finish that lifted the spirits of supporters and gave the Super Eagles an early advantage.
However, the Congolese side responded before the break. Meshak Elia equalised for DR Congo, restoring balance to the contest and setting the stage for an increasingly tense encounter in the second half.
As the game progressed, both teams struggled to break the deadlock. Nigeria attempted to regain control, but the match eventually drifted into extra time with neither side able to produce a decisive moment.
When the penalty shootout finally arrived, the Congolese players held their nerve better, converting enough of their attempts to secure victory and send Nigeria out of the qualification race.
The result means Nigeria will miss the World Cup for the second consecutive time, following their absence from the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle addressed the disappointment after the match, insisting that the team had given its maximum effort throughout the campaign.
When asked about speculation surrounding his future with the national team, the coach declined to offer a definitive response. He suggested that questions regarding his position should be directed to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and relevant authorities.
Chelle explained that he and his players approached the competition with determination, emphasising that every member of the squad and technical staff worked hard in pursuit of qualification.
The coach only assumed leadership of the Super Eagles earlier in the year, taking over the role in January and overseeing the team during the final phase of the qualification process.
During his time in charge, Nigeria recorded several positive results. His short tenure included a run of four victories and two draws, although the team ultimately had to rely on the African playoff route after missing automatic qualification.
Before facing DR Congo in the decisive encounter, Nigeria had defeated Gabon 4–1 after extra time, raising hopes that the team could still salvage their World Cup dream.
Despite the setback, Nigeria’s football history remains rich. Since making their debut at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles have appeared at the tournament six times, advancing to the round of 16 on three occasions.
Yet the recent pattern is concerning for fans. Nigeria has now missed three editions of the competition: 2006, 2022, and now 2026.
Commentary and Analysis
The Super Eagles’ latest qualification failure has reignited debates about the direction of Nigerian football. Many observers believe the issue goes beyond a single match or tournament and may reflect deeper structural challenges within the system.
Frequent coaching changes, inconsistent development programmes, and administrative uncertainties are among the factors analysts often highlight when discussing Nigeria’s recent struggles on the international stage.
Nevertheless, the team still has an opportunity to rebuild momentum in the near future. Attention will now shift toward the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Super Eagles will attempt to compete for continental glory once again.
Nigeria finished as runners-up in the last AFCON tournament held in Ivory Coast, and supporters will hope that the squad can transform the disappointment of the World Cup qualifiers into renewed motivation for the upcoming competition.
For Eric Chelle and his players, the challenge ahead will be restoring confidence among fans and proving that Nigerian football can once again compete at the highest level on the international stage.
