I Once Cleaned a British Airways Toilet — Peter Obi Recounts Leadership Lesson

Former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, recently recounted a personal story to illustrate his hands-on leadership approach and commitment to problem-solving.

Obi shared the anecdote during a Monday interactive session on 𝕏 with his supporters, popularly called the Obidients. He revealed that the experience occurred years ago while he was travelling on a British Airways flight during his tenure as governor.

The former governor explained that a female passenger had opened one of the aircraft’s toilets, found it in an unclean state, and walked away without using it. Instead of leaving the mess for others, Obi decided to take action himself.

“I went inside and cleaned it. When the staff returned, she was shocked. She didn’t tell me directly but later mentioned it to a minister and another official,” Obi recounted.

He emphasized that his motivation was practical rather than for praise. “I cleaned it because I might be the next person to use that toilet,” he said, highlighting a mindset of personal responsibility and foresight.

The cabin crew member reportedly expressed astonishment at Obi’s action, telling colleagues she “couldn’t believe what she saw.”

Obi used the incident to impart a broader lesson to Nigerians: take initiative to address problems instead of ignoring them. “When you see something wrong, fix it. We should stop living fake lives,” he advised, stressing the value of accountability in everyday situations.

As of now, British Airways has not provided a comment regarding Obi’s account of the event.
