Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has released documents he claims show that ₦50 billion was disbursed to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, by the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Fayose alleged that the funds were approved as emergency relief following the devastating explosion that occurred in Ibadan in January 2024. According to him, the financial support was provided to assist victims and address the aftermath of the incident.
The former governor made the disclosure after Governor Makinde reportedly denied receiving such an amount. Fayose countered the denial by publishing what he described as official records, insisting that the transaction did take place.
He further alleged that only ₦4.5 billion of the funds was eventually disbursed to victims affected by the explosion, while the remaining sum was allegedly diverted for political purposes.
In a statement accompanying the documents, Fayose claimed that the balance of the money was used to advance Makinde’s alleged presidential ambition. He linked the alleged diversion to internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and what he described as sustained attacks on President Tinubu and his administration.
Fayose openly challenged Makinde to seek legal redress if the claims were false, maintaining that financial records also show additional federal allocations to Oyo State that were never made public.
According to him, the decision to release the documents was aimed at allowing Nigerians to independently assess whether the Oyo State Government has been transparent in its financial disclosures.
“Only ₦4.5 billion was paid to victims of the Ibadan explosion. The rest, along with other undisclosed funds, was allegedly redirected toward his presidential ambition,” Fayose stated.
He also hinted at further revelations, claiming to possess documentary evidence regarding Oyo State’s actual Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which he said contradicts figures previously presented by the governor.
“For now, we will hold back. But let it be known that I do not make claims I cannot substantiate,” Fayose added.
