‘If She Feels Offended I Am Sorry’ – Kunle Afolayan Clarifies Relationship With Funke Akindele

Nigerian filmmaker and creative entrepreneur Kunle Afolayan has moved to clear the air over speculations suggesting a fallout between him and fellow Nollywood star Funke Akindele, stating firmly that there is no bad blood between them.

Speaking during a Sunday interview on ARISE News, Afolayan explained that he was surprised by claims of tension, noting that he has always regarded Akindele as family because of their long-standing relationship.

According to him, when she once mentioned that she thought he disliked her, he questioned where such an impression came from and emphasized that he harbours no resentment. He added that if anything he said was taken the wrong way, he sincerely apologizes.

Afolayan also used the opportunity to praise Akindele’s achievements, particularly her film promotion and marketing strategies. He encouraged upcoming creatives in the industry to study her model, describing her career journey as an example of steady and consistent growth.

While acknowledging her success, he explained that his own professional path is structured differently because his work extends beyond filmmaking into several other ventures within the creative space.

He highlighted that he manages a resort, operates a cultural centre in Lagos, and runs a training academy, alongside collaborations with international partners, stressing that film remains the foundation that birthed all his other projects.

The filmmaker further clarified that none of his earlier remarks were intended as criticism of Akindele or her methods, reiterating that he holds her in high regard.

His comments come at a time when conversations continue within Nollywood about building stronger and more sustainable systems for film marketing and distribution. Afolayan noted that recognizing and learning from the achievements of colleagues like Akindele is essential for the growth of the industry.
