The Rivers State House of Assembly has rejected reports suggesting that the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Dr. Ngozi Odu, have been halted.
According to earlier reports, the Assembly initiated formal impeachment actions on Thursday after House Leader Major Jack presented allegations of gross misconduct endorsed by 26 lawmakers.
Despite this, rumours surfaced on Friday claiming that the legislative process had been suspended.
Addressing the situation, Enemi George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, clarified that the Assembly has already delivered the notices of gross misconduct to both the governor and his deputy and is currently awaiting their official responses.
George stressed that the impeachment process is still active and has not been paused or terminated, describing the suspension rumours as deliberate misinformation aimed at confusing the public and creating unnecessary tension.
He stated:
“We are aware of attempts by certain individuals and media outlets to mislead the public by suggesting that the impeachment procedure has been stopped. These false narratives are being pushed to create disaffection between the House and the general public.”
George further explained that Speaker Martin Chike Amaewhule had formally authorized the transmission of the notices and reaffirmed the legislators’ commitment to fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities.
He urged citizens to disregard what he called political antics and smear tactics, insisting that the Assembly will not be intimidated or influenced by blackmail.
“Their efforts have already failed. We remain focused on our constitutional obligations and will not be deterred by threats or blackmail from those who do not have the interest of our developing democracy at heart.”
George concluded by emphasizing that the impeachment process is progressing within constitutional guidelines, and the House remains resolute in carrying out its duties.
