A fresh wave of internal conflict has rocked the Social Democratic Party (SDP) following claims that its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, has been removed from office — a development he has strongly dismissed.
In a firm response issued from Abuja, Gabam described the alleged expulsion as baseless and without legal backing, insisting that those behind the move lack the authority to make such a decision. He argued that the action is part of a calculated attempt to destabilise the party’s structure.
According to Gossip News Now, the controversy also involved the reported removal of Ogbonna Uchechukwu, the party’s National Youth Leader, alongside other members. However, Gabam’s camp maintains that the entire process violated the party’s constitutional provisions.
Through his legal representative, Abubakar Baba, the embattled chairman emphasised that any gathering convened without his approval as National Chairman cannot stand. He maintained that such actions amount to a breach of due process within the party.
In a strongly rephrased position, his camp made it clear that any meeting held outside the recognised leadership framework carries no legitimacy and should be treated as an attempt to seize control unlawfully.
Further allegations were directed at Olu Agunloye, the party’s National Secretary, who was accused of transmitting the outcome of the disputed meeting to INEC. Gabam’s supporters described this step as improper and inconsistent with established electoral guidelines.
The group also questioned the credibility of Sadiq, who reportedly presided over the meeting that announced the expulsion, arguing that he lacks recognised standing within the party’s official hierarchy.
Despite the claims against him, an opposing faction led by Rufus Aiyenigba, the party’s spokesperson, defended the decision. He stated that the action followed internal investigations into alleged misconduct and financial irregularities, suggesting that due procedures were followed.
To better understand the divide, the crisis can be viewed from two opposing perspectives:
- Gabam’s faction: insists the process was unconstitutional and driven by impostors
- Opposing bloc: maintains that disciplinary measures were necessary and justified
This split has intensified tensions across the party’s leadership structure.
Analysis and Commentary
The unfolding dispute within the SDP reflects a broader pattern of factional struggles often seen in Nigerian political parties. When leadership legitimacy is contested, it creates uncertainty that can weaken organisational stability.
For Shehu Gabam, the challenge now lies in consolidating support and proving his continued authority, while the opposing camp must justify its actions convincingly to party members and stakeholders.
If unresolved, this power tussle could disrupt the party’s preparations for future elections and reduce its overall political influence. Stability within party leadership remains crucial for credibility and effective opposition politics.
