Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration over its handling of national security, asserting that the government is not empowering the Nigerian military to perform effectively.
Speaking on Tuesday during the launch of the 2,000-unit Neighbourhood Security Network in Kano, Kwankwaso argued that the current administration lacks the political will to tackle insecurity decisively.
He emphasized that the Nigerian military has a proven track record, having served courageously in international missions in countries such as Darfur and Liberia. “The military has consistently performed excellently across the globe. President Tinubu must rise to the occasion and fulfil his role as Commander‑in‑Chief in addressing insecurity,” Kwankwaso said.
The former defence minister expressed concern over the rising spate of violent incidents in the country, lamenting that many innocent Nigerians are being killed while perpetrators escape accountability. “The government owes Nigerians an apology for its lack of seriousness in combating insecurity,” he said.
Reflecting on his tenure, Kwankwaso added, “When I was Defence Minister, I knew the strength of our military. They are courageous and capable, but what is required is a semblance of political will to enable them to achieve their mandate.”
He reiterated that the Nigerian military historically ranks among the best in global operations, and urged the current administration to adequately equip the armed forces to restore safety and order.
Looking ahead, Kwankwaso revealed plans for 2027, stating that if elected president, he intends to recruit over one million additional military personnel to strengthen national security. He stressed that any government failing to protect the lives and properties of its citizens has no legitimacy to remain in power.
