The National Legal Adviser of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Magaji Mato (SAN), has asserted that Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf did not personally secure his electoral victory, but rather benefited from the political influence and popularity of former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Mato made the statement on Wednesday while speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show.
He suggested that recent political developments involving Yusuf and some of his allies may be rooted in feelings of guilt linked to their longstanding ties with the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Governor Yusuf and several politicians who recently defected with him to the All Progressives Congress (APC) were seen wearing the iconic red cap associated with the Kwankwasiyya Movement, while insisting they still identified with the group.
Reacting to this, Mato argued that it is contradictory for anyone who claims loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya ideology to align with a political party that promotes a fundamentally opposing philosophy.
According to him, individuals who continue to wear the red cap while operating within different political platforms may be struggling to detach themselves from the movement that elevated them to political relevance.
Mato explained that this internal conflict could be responsible for the apparent confusion surrounding their political identity.
“Once you see the red cap, everyone knows it represents the personality, philosophy, and political identity of Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya Movement,” Mato said.
“So, if you claim to still wear the red cap, still identify as Kwankwasiyya, yet belong to another political party that openly promotes a directly opposing ideology, then you must answer that contradiction yourself.
“This is not just about wearing a red cap; it is about the ideology and values the red cap represents.
“You cannot be a follower of Kwankwaso and at the same time operate under a platform that stands against the core principles of Kwankwasiyya. It simply does not align. It is not possible.”
Mato further suggested that the affected politicians may be battling with their conscience.
“Perhaps their conscience is troubling them, and they find it difficult to detach themselves from the foundation that brought them into political relevance. That could explain their actions,” he added.
He concluded by reaffirming his claim that Kwankwaso’s political structure was the driving force behind Abba Yusuf’s emergence as governor.
“I can state categorically that it was not Abba Yusuf that the people voted into power. It was Kwankwaso. I can say this authoritatively, and I am certain that even the governor himself would acknowledge this reality,” Mato declared.
