‘It’s Very Shameful’ – PDP Spokesman Reacts to Members’ Clash at Secretariat

Fresh tension within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has drawn criticism from the party’s newly appointed National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, following a confrontation among members at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

The incident reportedly occurred at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters, where disagreements among party members escalated into a physical clash. The development has raised concerns about internal discipline and the current state of political engagement within the opposition party.

According to Gossip News Now, Ememobong addressed the situation during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he strongly condemned the altercation and described it as deeply embarrassing for a major political organisation.

During the interview, the PDP spokesman expressed disappointment that such scenes were unfolding in a democratic environment. He suggested that the episode reflects a troubling shift in the country’s political culture, particularly at a time when political institutions are expected to strengthen democratic values.

Ememobong also questioned the legitimacy of the meeting that reportedly led to the confrontation. In his view, gatherings of that nature should follow established procedures and must be conducted in line with electoral regulations.

He explained that official National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings require proper oversight from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Without such supervision, he argued, the credibility of decisions taken during such meetings could be questioned.

The PDP spokesman further lamented the risks faced by ordinary party members during politically charged gatherings. He noted that in previous political incidents across the country, clashes and security responses have sometimes resulted in injuries or even fatalities.

Ememobong used the situation to highlight what he sees as a broader problem within Nigeria’s democratic environment. He argued that rather than improving over time, the country’s electoral culture appears to be experiencing setbacks.

He stressed that democratic systems should protect the rights of both the majority and minority within political institutions. However, he warned that the current pattern suggests attempts by smaller factions to dominate decisions that should reflect the collective will of party members.

Commentary and Analysis

The confrontation at the PDP secretariat underscores the challenges facing political parties in maintaining internal cohesion, especially in periods of leadership disputes and factional disagreements.

For opposition parties, unity and discipline are often seen as essential for presenting a credible alternative to the ruling government. Incidents of internal conflict can weaken public confidence and distract from broader policy debates.

Political analysts suggest that strengthening internal party structures and conflict-resolution mechanisms could help prevent such confrontations in the future. If political parties are to play their role effectively in Nigeria’s democracy, maintaining order and respect for institutional procedures will remain crucial.
