Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has admitted that his spell with the national team has not gone as he hoped, describing his experience as a mix of pride and frustration.

The Werder Bremen striker, currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, spoke candidly about his challenges in front of goal during an interview with Nigerian sports journalist Oma Akatugba.

Boniface acknowledged fans’ disappointment over his lack of goals for Nigeria but maintained that he remains honoured to represent the country.

“I have been unlucky with the national team in terms of scoring goals, even though there were a couple of games where I was not good,” Boniface said. “My biggest dream as a football player was to represent my country, and I achieved that. I’m grateful. The fact that things haven’t gone perfectly doesn’t make me a bad player.”

Since breaking into the Super Eagles squad, the 24-year-old has been regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest attacking prospects. While his club performances in Europe have drawn praise, goals for the national team have remained elusive.

Boniface admitted that missed chances and difficult matches have tested his patience but insists that setbacks don’t define him.

“Struggles in a few games don’t change who I am or the pride I feel whenever I wear the Nigerian jersey,” he said.

Reflecting on his journey, the striker said injuries and challenges have shaped his resilience.

“I came from humble beginnings and have faced injuries that could’ve ended my career. So every day, I thank God. Being here alone is a blessing,” Boniface added.

Addressing criticism about his form at Bayer Leverkusen, Boniface defended his record.

“I missed many games but still scored eight goals. I don’t understand how that became a bad season,” he stated.

He also brushed off negative comments about his social media activity.

“I just post funny things. If people want to make it an issue, that’s their problem. When I don’t post, they say something is wrong; when I do, they still complain,” he said with a laugh.

On the transfer rumours linking him to AC Milan, Boniface revealed that he wasn’t bothered when the deal failed to materialize.

“When the Milan move didn’t happen, I was just relaxing with my friends. Things like that happen in football. I really love Germany,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Boniface remains optimistic about his Super Eagles future.

“I’m always proud to play for Nigeria. It hasn’t been easy, but I believe my moment will come. I’ll keep working hard and stay ready whenever I’m called up,” he concluded.
