Nigerian international striker Victor Boniface has opened up about the emotional toll of his ongoing injury struggles, admitting that he has been masking his pain with a smile for months.
Gossip News Now reports that Boniface’s loan club, Werder Bremen, confirmed that the 25-year-old forward will miss the rest of the 2025-2026 season following knee surgery on Saturday, dealing a major setback to his campaign in Germany.
The Bundesliga side revealed that the decision to operate came after a specialist assessment on Friday.
“The surgery became necessary after an examination by the knee specialist on Friday,” Werder Bremen stated, adding that Boniface would be sidelined for the “next few months,” effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
Following the procedure, Boniface took to 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) to announce that the operation had been completed successfully.
“Done and dusted,” he wrote.
He also shared his emotional struggle, admitting the mental strain he had been concealing:
“I’ve been putting on a fake smile for almost a year. God knows why all this is happening.”
Gossip News Now notes that this latest setback adds to a troubling injury history for the young striker, who has previously suffered two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries alongside multiple minor fitness issues that have repeatedly interrupted his development.
These persistent fitness concerns have also affected potential transfers. Boniface was unable to finalise a proposed loan move to Italian giants AC Milan during the summer due to medical concerns. He was also close to joining Saudi club Al Nassr, having reportedly agreed personal terms, but the deal fell through.
Boniface joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen and featured in 11 league matches before his injury, contributing two assists but failing to score.
With his season now effectively over, all focus will shift to his recovery and long-term fitness as he looks to overcome yet another challenging chapter in his young career.
