Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally expressed her intention to run in the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
She revealed this while speaking during a radio conversation with Nigerian football icon Segun Odegbami on Eagle7 Sports 103.7FM on Saturday, where she discussed her renewed involvement in frontline politics.
According to the former commissioner, her political comeback is focused solely on pursuing the governorship seat. She made it clear that she is not considering a return to previous positions, including serving again as a commissioner or seeking a seat in the Senate.
Iyabo explained that from the outset of discussions about her re-entry into politics, she told close associates that the only role that would bring her back into active participation would be the governorship, adding that the process toward that goal has already begun and is being pursued with strong commitment.
She also confirmed that she recently aligned with the APC, noting that her decision followed sustained encouragement from supporters. She said a group—formed independently of her—had reportedly been mobilizing for about two years before approaching her roughly a year ago with appeals for her to step forward as their preferred candidate.
Her announcement is expected to shape early political calculations in Ogun State, as the build-up to the 2027 governorship contest gradually gathers momentum.
