Former Plateau State governor Jonah Jang has dismissed circulating reports suggesting he has abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party.
The former senator made it clear that he remains firmly aligned with the party, describing the rumours of a political switch as misleading and unfounded.
Statement Issued to Address Speculation
The clarification came through a statement released by his media consultant, Clinton Garuba, who spoke on behalf of the veteran politician.
According to the statement, claims that Jang had defected to either the African Democratic Congress or the Social Democratic Party were fabricated.
Garuba explained that such narratives were deliberately circulated by individuals attempting to misrepresent Jang’s political stance.
Loyalty to PDP Remains Firm
The statement emphasized that Jang is one of the founding members of the PDP and continues to identify strongly with the party.
Despite acknowledging that the party is currently experiencing internal difficulties, he expressed confidence that the situation would eventually stabilize.
According to him, the PDP still holds an important place in Nigeria’s political landscape and retains the potential to regain its influence.
Confidence in Legal and Internal Solutions
Jang also voiced optimism that ongoing legal proceedings and internal reconciliation efforts within the party would eventually resolve its leadership disputes.
He maintained that the PDP has the capacity to overcome its current challenges through lawful processes and dialogue among stakeholders.
This belief, he said, reinforces his decision to remain within the party rather than seek alternative political platforms.
Reaction to Social Media Rumours
The statement came in response to speculation circulating widely on social media suggesting that the former governor had quietly switched parties.
Such rumours indicated that he might have joined either the ADC or SDP amid political realignments ahead of future elections.
Jang rejected those claims outright, insisting that they were politically motivated attempts to create confusion about his position.
Commentary and Analysis
Political rumours about party defections are common in Nigeria’s evolving political environment, particularly during periods of internal conflict within major parties.
In many cases, speculation spreads rapidly on social media before official confirmations are issued, often forcing politicians to publicly clarify their positions.
Jang’s decision to reaffirm loyalty to the PDP signals his confidence in the party’s ability to recover from its present challenges. It also reflects a broader strategy among some long-standing members who prefer to pursue reform from within rather than seek new political alliances.
As Nigeria’s political landscape gradually shifts ahead of future elections, such declarations of loyalty may play a key role in determining the stability and direction of major political parties.
