Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has appealed to Nigerian leaders to make the wellbeing of citizens their top priority in 2026, stressing that genuine, people-centered governance is critical to national growth, unity, and stability.
The message, conveyed to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora through his Media Assistant, Wealth Dickson Ominabo, encouraged leaders and citizens alike to renew their commitment to the country’s shared values and responsibilities.
Jonathan reflected on the significance of a new year, describing it as a moment for gratitude, hope, and deep reflection. He noted that the transition into 2026 offers an opportunity for fresh beginnings and collective resolve.
Looking back at the previous year, the former president acknowledged the economic strain and ongoing security challenges that placed heavy burdens on families and communities across the nation, testing resilience and, in many cases, resulting in hardship and loss.
He observed that these realities underscore the urgent need for leadership that is firmly rooted in the needs and aspirations of the people. Despite the challenges, Jonathan praised Nigerians for their strength, pointing to the courage, unity, and quiet determination displayed across communities.
According to him, the nation’s diversity, shared values, and collective hope for a better future have remained a source of strength even in difficult times.
As the new year unfolds, Jonathan urged leaders at all levels to recommit themselves to service-driven leadership founded on integrity, humility, and sincere concern for public welfare. He also called on citizens to uphold their civic responsibilities in support of national progress.
He emphasized that lasting development can only be achieved through shared responsibility, mutual respect, and a common commitment to the national interest, noting that unity remains central to Nigeria’s journey toward stability and inclusive growth.
Jonathan concluded by wishing Nigerians a calm and rewarding 2026, offering prayers for continued advancement toward unity, justice, and collective prosperity.
