The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has declared its readiness to welcome Governor Abba Yusuf and other political figures into the party, pending only an official date from the Presidency for the formal ceremony.
In an interview with Daily Trust, Ibrahim Zakari Sarina, the APC State Secretary, confirmed that all arrangements for the governor’s defection have been finalized. He noted that the party is now simply waiting for the Presidency to announce when the event will take place.
“We have put everything in place to receive Governor Yusuf and other political leaders. Now, we are awaiting the Presidency to set the official date,” Sarina stated.
At a recent APC stakeholders’ meeting, Sarina highlighted discussions on the ongoing electronic membership registration and the party’s strategic direction. He described the registration drive as a significant advantage for the APC as it positions itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Although Governor Yusuf’s potential defection was mentioned during the meeting, Sarina stressed that the party welcomes the development.
“While the defection was touched upon, it wasn’t the main focus. We have no objections; in fact, we are pleased,” he said, emphasizing that the party’s main objective remains strengthening its base and preparing for future elections.
Sarina reiterated that any move that bolsters the party’s strength is appreciated, especially as the APC continues to aim for victories across all levels of government.
“Bringing new members into our fold is exactly what we seek. Ultimately, our goal is to win elections,” he added.
He also addressed the political trajectory of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), stating that the APC would not pressure him to join.
“Kwankwaso appears uninterested at the moment, and that’s okay. If he chooses to join, he will be welcome,” Sarina remarked.
However, Sarina warned that the party would not tolerate internal conflicts or divisions. He pointed out that Kwankwaso’s past political engagements have often been associated with tensions.
“All we do not want from him is conflict. He has a history of creating tensions wherever he is,” he said.
Sarina also dismissed concerns that Kwankwaso’s influence could destabilize the APC or Kano’s political landscape. He emphasized that with the APC controlling the federal government, the party’s unity would remain intact, and no individual could disrupt it.
“With the government at the center, I don’t foresee him having the power to destabilize anything,” Sarina concluded.
