The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially commenced its online membership registration, even as uncertainty surrounds the anticipated defection of Governor Abba Yusuf, who has repeatedly postponed his switch to the ruling party.
Originally scheduled for January 15, the e-membership registration was delayed indefinitely, reportedly at the request of Governor Yusuf.
A source familiar with the matter told Daily Nigerian that when Yusuf became aware of the APC’s plans to proceed with the exercise, he informed Vice President Kashim Shettima. The vice president subsequently directed the party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, and former Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to hold off on the registration until the governor formally defected.
The APC had initially expected Yusuf’s defection to coincide with his January 5 birthday, but the date was later moved to January 12 as several state party leaders were either on holiday or performing the Umrah pilgrimage.
As January 12 approached, the defection was again rescheduled to January 16, to be announced shortly after an off-site Executive Council meeting in Abuja. However, the anticipated declaration did not materialise, leaving party officials disappointed.
Following the January 16 postponement, Yusuf allegedly set January 20 — a day after his scheduled meeting with President Bola Tinubu — as the new date.
When that date passed without action, a senior APC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the governor requested “more time to widen consultations.”
The defection uncertainty followed a private meeting between Yusuf and his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, at Kwankwaso’s Miller Road residence in Kano. Sources said the meeting was intended to ease tensions over Yusuf’s reported plan to leave Kwankwaso’s influence and join the APC.
Insiders added that Yusuf assured Kwankwaso he would not take any decisive steps until after meeting President Tinubu in France and conveying Kwankwaso’s “terms and conditions” for joining the APC. After unsuccessful attempts to meet Tinubu in Paris and Abu Dhabi last week, Yusuf eventually met the president on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Sources noted that President Tinubu had intended to host Kwankwaso a day after Yusuf’s visit, but the meeting was reportedly put on hold.
Despite the lingering uncertainty over the governor’s defection, the Kano APC had earlier inaugurated an e-membership registration committee, co-chaired by Rabiu Suleiman-Bichi, Managing Director of the Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Authority, and Baffa Babba-Dan’agundi, Director-General of the National Productivity Centre.
While a “001 membership card” had reportedly been reserved for Governor Yusuf at his Diso Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, the online registration process has now officially begun across the state.
