Kano Governor Moves Toward APC as Meeting With Tinubu Falls Through

Kano State Governor Kabir Abba Yusuf has begun reaching out to key figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC) as part of ongoing efforts to finalize his possible defection to the ruling party.

According to sources close to the governor, a planned meeting with President Bola Tinubu in France was abruptly canceled. Although some insiders claimed this was due to “visa complications,” others suggested the governor may not have received a formal green light from the president for the meeting to proceed.

Prior to this development, Governor Yusuf reportedly held a discreet meeting with his longtime political mentor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, where they discussed the rising tension surrounding the governor’s anticipated move to the APC. During the conversation, Yusuf allegedly assured Kwankwaso that he would hold off on making any official announcement until he had spoken with the president and clarified the conditions for joining the ruling party.

With the APC congress approaching and political pressure intensifying, sources say the governor may soon declare his exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and formally align with the APC.

On Tuesday, Yusuf met with Abba Bichi, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, informing him of his intention to defect. A day later, he held discussions with Nasir Ja’oji, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Citizenship and Leadership, to outline his plans and coordinate a meeting with APC state chairman, Abdullahi Abbas.

The governor has also reportedly instructed his media team to invite selected journalists to Abuja for a press briefing, increasing speculation regarding his next political move.

“Already, the governor has summoned his social media handlers and specific local radio stations to Abuja for what appears to be a major announcement. The exact agenda is still uncertain. It could be a council meeting update or a declaration of his new political path,” a source told Daily Nigerian.

Initially, APC leaders in Kano had intended to register Governor Yusuf as the first member on the party’s new e-registration platform. However, this plan was suspended due to his repeated hesitation and shifting timelines.

Frustrated by the delays, party stakeholders decided to move ahead with the registration process without him. But according to insiders, the governor later contacted them, asked for patience, and reaffirmed his commitment to joining the APC.

As a result, the APC leadership has now put the e-registration exercise on hold indefinitely, pending the governor’s final decision.
